Optical properties of water and spectral light absorption by living and non-living particles and by yellow substances in coral reef waters of French Polynesia

چکیده
Spectral optical properties in different kinds of water were studied at several islands in French Polynesia. Optical differences between the waters of a high island (Moorea, Society archipelago), an atoll (Takapoto, Tuamotu archipelago) and the ocean above the outer reef slope were first assessed in terms of irradiance and diffuse attenuation coefficients. These differences were analysed with respect to the effect of phytoplankton, non-living particles and yellow substances, with these 2 latter components being responsible for most of the variations observed. Absorption coefficients for phytoplankton and non-living particles, as well as absorption by yellow substances, were also measured in the waters of the high island of Tahiti (Society archipelago) using the 'glass-fiber filter' technique and spectrophotometr~c measurements, respectively. These data showed large spatial variability of absorption, the main absorbing compound varying from one location to another depending on whether a station was mainly influenced by emergent land or by the ocean. Specific absorption coefficients for phytoplankton showed marked spatial and temporal vanations among the stations. Spatial variations were related to concentrations of chlorophyll a and covarying pigments, taxonomic differences and total suspended particles. Temporal variations were probably caused by differences in the incident UV radiation between summer and winter These results show that optical properties of water can be used to describe the medium in aquatic environmental studies.

Biodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)
The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...

Profiles of scalar, downwelling, upwelling, and spectral irradiance were measured on 37 dates in 1982-1983. Values of the attenuation coefficient K were 0.8-1.2 m-l, and the reflectance R was 0.03-0.06. By Kirk’s method, the absorption and scattering coefficients a and b were found to be 0.44-0.83 and 1.8-5.0 m-l. Also measured were turbidity, chlorophyll, and absorption spectra of dissolved ye...
متن کاملSpectral reflectance of coral reef bottom-types worldwide and implications for coral reef remote sensing
Coral reef benthic communities are mosaics of individual bottom-types that are distinguished by their taxonomic composition and functional roles in the ecosystem. Knowledge of community structure is essential to understanding many reef processes. To develop techniques for identification and mapping of reef bottom-types using remote sensing, we measured 13,100 in situ optical reflectance spectra...
متن کاملBottom Reflectance in Ocean Color Satellite Remote Sensing for Coral Reef Environments
Most ocean color algorithms are designed for optically deep waters, where the seafloor has little or no effect on remote sensing reflectance. This can lead to inaccurate retrievals of inherent optical properties (IOPs) in optically shallow water environments. Here, we investigate in situ hyperspectral bottom reflectance signatures and their separability for coral reef waters, when observed at t...

Photoacclimatization of zooxanthellae extracted from the coral Pocillopora verrucosa was studied through the determination of pigments, light absorption and photosynthetic parameters, for samples collected in summer and winter between 1 and 40 m on a northwestern reef of Tahiti (French Polynesia). The same measurements were also performed on phytoplanktonic samples collected at a stable oceanic...
